31 Days of Horror: Day 21 “The Thing”

Day 21: Look closely at your neighbour … Trust no-one… Man is The Warmest Place to Hide. John Carpenter’s, The Thing I remember my dad always watching this movie when I was younger and never really getting into it but watching it now that I am older I can really appreciate it. Some of the movie is slow, but it builds the suspense throughout the movie. The movie keeps you guessing which makes it interesting. Some of the special effects could have been done better but some were

31 Days of Horror: Day 20 “Shaun of the Dead”

Day 20: “Take car. Go to Mum’s. Kill Phil. Grab Liz. Go to the Winchester. Have a nice cold pint, and wait for all of this to blow over. Yeah, boyyyeee!” Today we share our thoughts on Shaun of the Dead. One of my all time favorite movies… or is it spelled favourite? Either way, the British humor is second to none in this zombie apocalypse comedy. From lighter takes on otherwise-dire situations, it really captivates you as a viewer and still manages to keep a serious tone. Mo

31 Days of Horror: Day 19 “The Babadook”

Day 19: Where there is imagination, there is darkness and from within that darkness lurks a being of unfathomable terror … close to home. If it’s in a word. Or it’s in a look. You can’t get rid of … The Babadook I don’t have anything negative to say about The Babadook. I absolutely loved it. It’s dreary and tense from the start with little rest throughout. The creature’s design is unnerving but he is kept just enough in the dark that I was inescapably drawn to him. The mother

31 Days of Horror: Day 18 “The Void”

Day 18: A new dimension in evil; There is a hell – This is worse. The Void. The Void is not perfect though it does deserve at least one viewing. The acting is just okay across the board with a relational subplot that’s been done plenty of times before. Where it shines is the practical effects. Almost every creature and set piece look handmade and I couldn’t help but feel nostalgic to horror movies of yesteryear when that was all they had. Each layer down the shift in atmosphe

31 Days of Horror: Day 17 “The House of the Devil”

Day 17: Talk on the phone. Finish your homework. Watch T.V. Die …in The House of the Devil. The House of the Devil is a slow, slow burn. Unfortunately, when it does pick up it has already been so long since anything exciting has happened the climax seems thrown in there at the end. As if the first hour and a half is one movie and the finale is separate. I wanted more build to that climax, there were honestly maybe only one or two clues before our Samantha is actually in dange

31 Days of Horror: Day 16 “Event Horizon”

Day 16: Infinite Space – Infinite Terror… Event Horizon As far as supernatural, deep space horror goes this is one of my favorites. Unlike Alien, where you at least know what the big bad is, Event Horizon is still vague on that detail until almost the end of the movie. And by the end, I always want more. More of the other side and more psychological warfare. Obviously, by that point you’re already in some really dark territory and you’ll never look at Sam Neil the same way ag

31 Days of Horror: Day 15 “Hocus Pocus”

Day 15: It’s just a bunch of hocus pocus. The Sanderson Sister’s may be responsible for my love of Salem, Mass and everything associated with it. Hocus Pocus came on the scene when I was three years old so naturally, I grew up with it. I get that there’s a heavy amount of nostalgia associated with this movie but nobody can deny that Bette Midler kills this role. This is one of those movies that gets me stoked for the season, even in March… the first time I watched it this yea

The Ultimate Experience In Grueling Terror and The Sequel To The Ultimate Experience In Grueling Terror! They got up on the wrong side of the grave. Kiss Your Nerves Good-Bye with the Evil Dead 1 & 2 Double Feature! Both films have similar plots, acting, special effects, and endings with Ash defeating the demons. I thought the first one was scarier than the second film, but the second film was funnier than the first. Both films, in my opinion, are definitely unique from other

31 Days of Horror: Day 13 “The Exorcist”

Somewhere between science and superstition, there is another world. The world of darkness. Nobody expected it, nobody believed it, and nobody could stop it. The one hope, the only hope: THE EXORCIST This is not only a horror movie but a psychological thriller. This movie has it all from jump scares, gore, vulgarities, to just creepy scenes. The special effects are really good and truly remarkable. I kept thinking I should turn this off but I just couldn’t because I couldn’t r

31 Days of Horror: Day 12 “Creep”

I thought I was a creep… this guy is on another level. From the producers of Paranormal Activity and The Purge, Creep! What did you think? I honestly didn’t like this movie very much. The movie was predicable and slow. There was a low budget feel to the movie which I wouldn’t mind if it was done better. I didn’t like the style of filming even though I understand why they filmed it like that. I didn’t find it scary at all, the “jump scenes” didn’t even have that effect. The ac

31 Days of Horror: Day 11 “Black Sunday”

STARE INTO THESE EYES… discover deep within them the unspeakable terrifying secret of BLACK SUNDAY… it will paralyze you with fright! Condemned witch Princess Asa returns from the dead two centuries after her execution and wreaks vengeance on her killers’ family. Possessing the body of a descendant who happens to look just like her, Asa pulls out all the stops to exact her revenge. The only thing I found scary is all the demonic worship and rituals in the movie. I felt that t

31 Days of Horror: Day 10 “The Monster Squad”

You know who to call when you have ghosts but who do you call when you have monsters? Join the discussion and let us know what you think of The Monster Squad! I had completely forgotten about this movie and really enjoyed watching it again. Every stereotype of monsters is in this movie from monsters don’t have to run, to the costumes, the script, even the car that Dracula drives, which was done I think for comedy effect. There is a lot of comedy mixed in with the horror of th

Join us as we share our opinions on the Universal Pictures thriller, 1931’s Frankenstein. We wear our badge of courage proudly. The story of Frankenstein is one of my all time favorites. It’s a solid piece of horror sci-fi that draws you in and causes you to sympathize with all of the characters, including the monster. This story is so close to my hear

31 Days of Horror: Day 8 “It Follows”

Day 8: It doesn’t think. It doesn’t feel. It doesn’t give up. It Follows Have you ever seen a movie that puts you in a weird mood and you can’t stop thinking about it for a couple of days after watching. It Follows did that for me. Naturally I think that makes it a great film and caused me to think. A great concept , well executed, that really puts you in the driver’s seat. “What would I do in that situation?” It will keep you looking over your shoulder and gives truth to the

31 Days of Horror: Day 7 “You’re Next”

Day 7: The door may be locked, but it won’t protect you. The animals are on the hunt in You’re Next Erin may be my current favorite final girl. I think part of that comes from her actually having a backstory to explain how she got here and is able to survive. You understand her and because of that when her plans play out it’s much more satisfying. A modern day Kevin McCallister. The twist is fairly predictable with clues dropped throughout the movie which, honestly, left me a

They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky. They’re altogether ooky… Their house is a museum. When people come to see ‘em, they really are a scream! So get a witch’s shawl on, a broomstick you can crawl on. We’re gonna pay a call on the Addams Family and the Addams Family Values in this 31 Days of Horror Double Feature! These films are definitely more of a comedy rather than horror. It has many elements of horror but turns everything that is supposed to be scary

31 Days of Horror: Day 3 “Sleepy Hollow”

You can lock the doors. You can bolt the windows. But can you survive the night? Heads will roll in Tim Burton’s 1999 Sleepy Hollow! [Neeeiiiiggghhh] I love this movie and it’s perfect for early October viewings to get you in the Halloween mood. For me, it’s Tim Burton at his best with the bleak, eerie atmosphere while having plenty of charm throughout. It’s classic Halloween imagery is only broken during Crane’s brief flashback sequences which feel very “Burton” while never

31 Days of Horror: Day 1 “Creepshow”

Day 1: From the Masters of Terror and the Macabre, George A. Romero & Stephen King, 1982’s Creepshow! The Most Fun You’ll Ever Have… BEING SCARED! I like the movie making it look like a comic book, which were so popular back in the 80’s. The special effects are not all that great and the stories are like just like something out of a comic book. I think the plots of the short stories were redundant and simple, if you’re a bad person then bad things will happen to you. The scri

    Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice!

Beetlejuice has been in my top 10 favorite movies of all time since I could remember. Since ’93 I’ve been in love with Tim Burton’s visual aesthetic when I saw Nightmare Before Christmas 3 times in theaters. I was 3 years old when the movie came out. Beetlejuice is one of those films that I honestly can’t recall my first time viewing. I’ve seen the movie countless times and I still love watching it. Because the movie came out in ’88, I never had the opportunity to see the cas
