Based on the True Case Files of the Warrens… The Conjuring
This movie really gives me the creeps. I think that once a movie is not only based on demons and satanic activities but is also based on true events it goes a little too far for my tastes. I saw this movie for the first time this year and I tried to watch it again for the purposes of this review, but I only got about halfway through it. I think the filming and the special effects are well done. The jump scenes are well timed and may cause you to jump. The acting is good and the script keeps you interested. I liked that the movie ends on a positive which does help alleviate some of the darkness of the movie. If demonic activity doesn’t bother you and you like horror movies then I would recommend this movie.

Within the horror genre, I’m definitely partial to ghost stories, and The Conjuring is near perfect. The balance between exposition and scares may seem formulaic, I wouldn’t argue, but the pacing of those elements is better than most by a wide margin. Each character has a defined role an established degree of importance so whenever anyone is being haunted, you care. Even the spirit doing the haunting is fleshed out (pun intended) so the audience understands her context and purpose. After the film, I was still so interested in the Warren’s field and process I began a deep dive into their “museum” and other stories. I won’t comment on some of the other films in this universe, but they definitely had a great starting point.

Prior to Hereditary, The Conjuring was the last movie to genuinely give me the willies. This movie is solid gold. In my opinion, the cinematography, acting, and storyline are flawless. Coupling this with The Demonologist by Gerald Brittle, the book about the true accounts of the Warren’s, adds a scary realism to everything watched in the film. This is a movie that I will recommend to every fan of horror. I would like to give all of the kudos to James Wan, Chad Hayes, and Carey Hayes for the work the work they did on this film. Nothing but praise goes out to the actors and actresses for this one. If somehow you missed it, go buy yourself a copy now, turn out the light and scoot up the couch as close to the screen as possible.
